My Notes edit

My self-summary

Life after college is a scary thing. Most days, I have to remind myself that I actually graduated and the rest of my life has supposedly started. Of course, now that I have a job, it's starting to sink in a little bit. Right now I'm just taking one day at a time and trying to figure out who I want to be.

What I do know? I'm a writer. I'm a coffee addict--if I could just get an IV running all day, that would be great. I'm a displaced Yankee hailing originally from Rochester, NY. I'm an athlete (softball, horseback riding, rugby, fencing). I'm a reader. I'd rather be at the beach than anywhere else. My pony is prettier than every other pony in the world. After spending 5 months in Edinburgh, I love anything having to do with Scotland. I love watching So You Think You Can Dance with friends and offering insightful criticism like I actually know how to dance--which I don't. At all. I like to name inanimate objects, and have a trusty label maker just for that purpose. If there's something on the floor, I will be the first person to trip on it, and I will squeal and flail as I do so.

I'll let you know when I figure the rest out.

EDIT: I can't believe I forgot this, the one thing I absolutely know hands down. The only excuse I can make is that I'm still trying to recover from the baseball team losing, and the Final Four disaster (yeah, it's still that painful). But: I'm a Tar Heel born and bred, and Carolina basketball is pretty much my religion.

What I'm doing with my life

What any self-respecting English major, creative writing minor would do: working in publishing for practically nothing. More specifically, I work for an electronic publishing company in Durham that publishes college textbooks. I'm a junior editor / office minion, which means I do everything from editing manuscripts to making hundreds of copies and PDFs to attacking the copier when it decides it would rather eat paper than print it. Glamorous indeed.

But really, the job is just a convenient cover until I publish my first bestseller, and then I will be a permanent writer / lady of leisure.

I'm really good at

Writing (I hope). Creating disasters every time I venture into the kitchen (not that it discourages me from trying...). Playing the viola. Horseback riding. Bragging about my pony. Most sports, except those that involve shooting balls into baskets or goals. Being sarcastic. Being spastic. Being an obsessive compulsive student, but I guess that doesn't count for much anymore.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: Harry Potter (should go without saying, really). Sarah Dessen. Tamora Pierce. Anne McCaffrey. Philip Pullman. George RR Martin. Stephenie Meyer (as much as it shames me to admit to it). Karleen Koen. Sharon Kay Penman. Will Shakespeare. Antoine de Saint-Exupery. Cassandra Clare. Naomi Novak. Bill Willingham's 'Fables.'

Essentially, young adult fiction, fantasy, and historical fiction are my bread and butter. I'm also rather fond of a lot of the classics, but I freaking hate James Joyce. Don't get me started on him.

Movies: Stardust (I will watch it anytime, with anyone, as many times a day as I can. Really.) A League of their Own. Stand By Me. Field of Dreams. The Sandlot. Lord of the Rings. Harry Potter. Pirates. Chronicles of Narnia. The History Boys. Little Miss Sunshine. Shakespeare in Love. Big Fish. Stage Beauty. Atonement. Anything that has James McAvoy in it.

Music: RX Bandits. Carbon Leaf. Josh Ritter. Jose Gonzalez. Brett Dennen. Loreena McKennitt. Alkaline Trio. Something Corporate. Less Than Jake. Nick Drake. Colin Hay. Ben Folds.

These days, I'm very into guys strumming at guitars. I've built an entire Pandora website that suits me just fine. I also like lots of classical music, product of 11 years of playing in orchestras. And celtic / ceilidh music is pretty fantastic too.

The six things I could never do without

Coffee.
My laptop.
Books.
My pony.
Beach house.
Family & friends.
Carolina basketball gets added to the list at #7. I don't care that I'm breaking the rules.

You should message me if

Basically, I'm totally open to meeting new people, making friends, etc., but chances are I'll be too shy to message anyone first. So if you want to chat, give me a holler!
