My Notes edit

My self-summary

New wave, old school quasi do-gooder humanist, likes trees and people equally. I'm young at heart and get along well with animals and children. I find myself growing increasingly idealistic as well as bothered by injustice in the world. but I also love the simpler things in life like wine and cheese and apples, and sitting next to a stream and stacking rocks into piles.

I like to be outside and am still trying to figure out if I prefer the city or being surrounded by more natural beauty. I enjoy a range of activities, but recently my favorite have been the drum circle at Malcolm X park, playing chess, and always being in the woods. I really like the AFI Silver theater in Silver Spring, documentaries and off-beat films.

What I'm doing with my life

Right now I work as a fundraiser for a non-profit "peace" advocacy organization. I participate some in the advocacy part of the work but hope to do more eventually as a full time advocate/organizer.

Right now I feel committed to pursuing advocacy and organizing as a career. I'm fairly passionate about politics and social change in particular, and am especially interested in people who feel similarly. When I was younger older conservative acquaintances told me I'd become more conservative as I got older, like everyone does, but I find myself increasingly convinced that socialism is the way to go. But humane democratic socialism with a heart. Not the mean heavy handed variety people often think of.

I studied sociology in school a good bit, and lived a life that helped me to see past social conventions often. I think as humans we can make the world what we want it, and largely it's about how we as groups of people allocate our resources. Getting back to what I do with my life...I'm interested in "peace" because I think all the money spent on military is the worst mis-allocation of resources and a barrier to addressing alot of other problems.

I'm really good at

I'm really good at appreciating people and nature, and the variety of life. I'm good at listening and empathizing with people and their feelings. I'm good at arguing and building a case for ideas. Also building fires and walking.

The first thing(s) people usually notice about me

I'm not sure... I guess people would immediately notice I'm a white male.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I just read "The Life of PI" and was very impressed, Same with "Confederacy of Dunces". I also occasionally enjoy non-fiction related to social change/social problems.

I like documentaries, and independent films, especially visual films, stuff like "delicatessen" and Akira Kirosowas "Dreams". I like comedy alot.

I love food, as I mentioned before cheese, and wine, especially together, apples, oranges, pineapples. avocados, mangoes, olives, coffee, espresso, lasagna (I'm writing this while hungry). Italian food, sushi, Ethiopian, Chinese all sound good right now, Bistro Du Coin in DuPont...

Musically I have a range to likes; Jazz, dub, down tempo, and progressive hip-hop, bluegrass, house,

I spend a lot of time thinking about

US military spending, the future, woods, sunlight, chess, food, whether or not the universe will end in a big crunch or a dissipation of energy, my family, my childhood, water, the practical application of sociology, friends, traveling,

On a typical Friday night I am

it depends, relaxing watching a movie with friends roommates, at a bar or club, sleeping, eating

The most private thing I'm willing to admit here

I edited my profile at 3am after coming back from a bar

You should message me if

you feel like it, especially you want someone to hike with or listen to you and bounce around ideas, go out to eat lunch or have a coffee with.
