McGregor and Marquette Iowa are located across the Mississipi River from Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin's 2nd oldest city. This charming area has several wonderful tourist attractions, such as Effigy Mounds National Park, Pikes Peak State Park, Yellow River Forest, The Villa Louis Historic Site, Spook Cave, Isle of Capri Casino and many hiking and biking trails, just to name a few. McGregor has become one of Iowa's top tourist destinations with all the things to see and do.
J.D. Bickel established the J.D. Bickel Produce Company, believed to be the largest produce station including fruits, apples, and poultry in the area. The business grew so much that branch stations were operated as far west as Mason City. These goods were shipped away as far as New York on his own railroad cars. Bickel also owned the Bickel Meat and Grocery and the Bickel Baking Company. As many as 200 employess worked in the bakery and a great number of others were employed at his other businesses.
Before establishing the J.D. Bickel Produce Company, Bickel was also a partner in a creamery with W.C. Neill in Giard, Iowa. This Creamery was one of the First 6 creameries in Iowa.
He and his wife Mary produced 10 children. Six of his children were college graduates and three died within a few day of each other during the diphtheria epidemic.
The large kitchen window and upstiairs bedroom window have the original stained glass. The most attractive and unique feature is the upstairs side window that is accented by an oval reflecting the Turkish influence of the Old Ottoman Empire. The Victorian style trim enhances the era of the 1800's and is a remnant of McGregor's past that lives on.
