Description
Uphall is a particularly attractive Grade II listed late 18th century country house, with later alterations and additions.
The house retains much period detail with fine well proportioned rooms typical of the period with elegant sash windows, moulded cornice work and good chimney pieces.
As can be seen from the floor plans, the house has well arranged and spacious accommodation with a particularly attractive large central reception hall, 3 further good reception rooms and a family sitting room/playroom adjoining the kitchen/breakfast room which has a 4 oven Aga. There are 8 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms on the first floor with a further 2 bedrooms and 6th bathroom on the second floor.
The property was acquired by the current owners in 1976 and since then there has been a continual programme of updating and refurbishment.
Uphall is situated close to Sandringham and indeed there are royal connections since the house was previously owned by Lady Femoy, Lady in Waiting and a great friend of the Queen Mother who used the house as her Norfolk base whilst Sandringham House was being renovated in the early 1970s.
Uphall is situated in extensive and mature gardens and grounds with fine views towards the church to the east and adjoining open countryside to the south and west over which there are far reaching views.
The Outside The house is approached from the northeast by a gravelled drive which leads to a large gravelled sweep with ample parking and turning space to the front and east of the house. The drive also divides to a back drive to the north of the house where there is a single garage and a further open-fronted double garage and adjoining wood store. Also situated to the north of the house is the original coach house traditionally constructed of brick and chalk stone with a hipped pantile roof and providing further garaging, storage and the original stables with a hayloft over.
The Gardens and Grounds These are a particularly attractive feature of the property and are arranged as follows. To the east of the house there is an area of lawn and beyond this a formal herb garden/potager as well as an area of productive kitchen garden. To the north of this is a hard tennis court protected by beech hedging to the north and east. There are magnificent mature trees including lime and yew and there are fine views from the house to the east towards the church.
The main garden lies to the south and west of the house and there is a stone paved terrace adjoining the house to the west bordered by mixed flower and shrub borders with a variety of climbing shrubs and roses trained against the west wall of the house. This overlooks a large expanse of lawned garden and there are fine views beyond to open countryside with woodland in the distance. To the northwest there is a formal pond and water garden and an area of south facing partly walled garden. The gardens and grounds contain a great variety of fine mature trees including lime, beech, oak and yew and there is an area of mixed woodland to the northwest and much of the woodland is under-planted with spring bulbs. In all the land extends to around 5 acres (est).
