Summary The Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering Department within the University of Michigan College of Engineering, is seeking temporary Research Assistants at the Marine Hydrodynamics Laboratory (MHL) located in West Hall on Central Campus in Ann Arbor for the 2024 MHL Summer Internship Program. Who We Are The Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, was started in 1879 with an act of Congress authorizing a Navy officer to teach "steam engineering and iron shipbuilding." Since this modest beginning, NAME has grown into a worldwide leader in education and research, with 25 faculty and 11 staff, serving our undergraduate and graduate students along with a network of some 3,000 living alumni. Our department continues to develop engineers and technology to advance the state-of-the-art systems operating in the marine environment. The department's students and faculty engage in a wide range of research, with specialists working in hydrodynamics; marine and offshore structures; dynamics, control and marine system integration; robotics and autonomy; yacht design; design, production, and management; marine renewable energy; and structural and hydro-acoustics. The Department has access to outstanding computational resources as well as the experimental facilities of the Marine Hydrodynamics Laboratory with its large physical modeling basin which serves as a vital resource. Responsibilities* Developing a Work Log Mid-term Projects Presentation Final Self-Reflection Presentation Final Project(s) Presentation Final Project(s) Report Poster Potential Projects/Topics Initial and detailed engineering design using 3D modeling software Physical testing and evaluation of newly developed experimentation systems Development of data processing programs Machining parts on 3-axis manual and/or CNC mills Development of instructional resources Assessment of designs using FEA and/or CFD analysis software Development of hardware and software for control systems Required Qualifications* Students currently earning a high school diploma with a desire to pursue a degree in Engineering. Students pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in any Engineering related field. Work Schedule 30-40 Hours per Week Paying $15-$16/hr (dependent on experience) Runs Nominally May 6th, 2024 to August 23rd, 2024 Background Screening The University of Michigan conducts background checks on all job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background checks.
