Made Possible.Role SummaryThe Assistant Superintendent - Pulp Mill is a key member of the Fibers Department's management team that is responsible for providing leadership, operational strategies, and ensuring excellent safety performance for their area. This role ensures the safe and efficient operations of all area activities in the Fibers Department as part of an integrated mill. This role reports to the Fibers Department Manager.Duties & Responsibilities (include but are not limited to the following): * Utilize and refine standard work systems to effect sustainable positive results in safety, environmental, people, housekeeping, quality, cost, and performance. * Demonstrate safety as a core value by creating a safe work environment. * Steward safety systems and processes that support achieving our continually improving annual goals. * Ensure efficient operation of wood product line, including Brown stock, bleach plant and chemical areas. * Develop and manage Front Line Leaders through mentorship, coaching and accountability methods. * Collaborates with all levels of management personnel to establish production and quality control standards, develop budgets and cost controls to help ensure long term sustainability. * Manage all area production activities and establish area production priorities to ensure effective operations and cost factors * Monitor and manage Key Process Indicators * Implement improvement strategies designed to: support productivity, increase yield and operating efficiency, reduce cost, and improve reliability. * Enforce strict safety standards and practices. Be aware of existing safety hazards and make every feasible attempt to correct these hazards * Provide input on capital projects and strategic improvement plans for all other Mill areas * Ensure there is effective communication of business strategy, goals, and initiatives to Font Line Leaders and production crews * Manage continuous improvement projects for area of responsibility * Coordinates with maintenance to prioritize maintenance and outage needs * Coordinates predictive and preventative maintenance activities with Maintenance Department establishing long-term sustainability for equipment * Implement and improve standard work systems such as trouble cause corrections, standard operating procedures, startup/shutdown checklists, and centerlines * Maintain effective communications and working relationships with Operations Departments, Maintenance, Safety, IT, Environmental, Human Resources, Engineering, Purchasing and Suppliers, * Collaborate with DLL (Department Learning Leader) to ensure training needs and priorities are being met. * Other duties as assignedRequired Characteristics * Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Paper Science or related field with five years of operations experience within the paper industry including three (3) years of progressive leadership roles OR * Five (5) years of progressive and practical pulp mill experience including two (2) years of pulp mill supervisory experience * Demonstrated knowledge of digester operations, pulp screening, pulp washing, and bleaching processes * Strong interpersonal and leadership skills * Proven strong strategic planning and analytical skills * Demonstrated troubleshooting skills of the pulping process * Demonstrated ability to develop strategic priorities to meet short and long-term objectives * Proven ability to manage and mentor leadership staff * Proven experience with reliability and continuous improvement principles and techniques * Demonstrated ability to drive change leading to improved performance over time * Strong organizational skills with the proven ability develop and implement changes necessitated by internal and external business conditions * Solid oral and written communication skills * Comprehensive knowledge of the operation of an integrated mill * Proficient at managing all levels of an operating area and interfacing with all levels of an organization * Possess an entrepreneurial and innovative spirit, with a situational (servant, directive, collaborative) leadership approach to managing the team * Must be able to pass a background check, drug screening and reference check * Legally authorized to work in the United StatesDesired Characteristics * Experience within a unionized environment * Working knowledge of SAP * Knowledge Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma * Experience and knowledge of Process Safety Management (PSM)Nearest Major Market: Texarkana
